A hearty welcome to Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. He is one of my favourite actors and was top of my list to land the role as our favourite Time Lord.
The Scottish actor/writer/director, from Glasgow, was born Peter Dougan Capaldi on 14th April 1958. He started his acting career in 1982 in Living Apart Together. The following year he played Oldsen in Local Hero. In 1988, he played Angus Flint in The Lair of the White Worm. Capaldi is probably best known for his role as the foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It (2005-2012) and In the Loop (2009).
In 1995, Capaldi won the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film for his film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, which he directed. In the same year he also wrote Soft Top, Hard Shoulder, which won the Audience Award at the London Film Festival, and wrote and directed Strictly Sinatra.
Peter Capaldi is no stranger to the world of The Doctor. Fans of Doctor Who will know that Capaldi played Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii, with David Tennant as The Doctor. The following year, his performance as John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth was so outstanding it reduced me to tears! Torchwood was a spin-off show starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness who first made his appearance in Doctor Who (of which Torchwood is an anagram). In fact, Capaldi is a die-hard fan of the programme, and has been from a very young age, so I’m sure he’ll be perfect for the role.
One final piece of trivia: Peter Capaldi starred in World War Z (2012) as W.H.O. Doctor! Priceless!
You can find out more on Peter Capaldi from his IMDB profile and his Wikipedia page. The Peter Capaldi Doctor Who Fan Group Facebook page has been set up and there is also a Peter Capaldi 12th Doctor Fan Page!
You can find my Doctor Who pages here. They are still under construction, but you can also read all my “Hex in the City” articles in the Hex Files! Feel free to browse round the site!
Again, many congratulations, Peter! Really looking forward to seeing you play The Doctor. Please stay in the TARDIS for a very long time! Here, once again, is the moment the exciting news was revealed!
Also, for Malcolm Tucker fans… *Language Warning*!
